Technologically Inept Football Manager Punts ICO

Harry Redknapp is the latest celebrity endorsement for an ICO, but he’s a strange choice.

There have been a number of strange celebrity endorsements in recent months for ICOs, from Floyd Mayweather to Paris Hilton, but football manager Harry Redknapp seems to take the oddity-cake.

Harry Redknapp, a famous face and name around English football, has tweeted – which is rare enough as it is – that he is “proper excited” about ICO Electroneum.

Redknapp has stated publicly, when charged with a tax evasion charge in 2012, that he is technologically inept. At that time, he said he didn’t know how to work a computer, had never heard of email and had never sent a text message.

ICO fever

Celebrity endorsements have become quite regular for ICOs, with their details however remaining shaded. Stox, a prediction market ICO, used Floyd Mayweather and Football star Luis Suarez to punt their ICO.

All manner of celebrities, including rappers such as Wu Tang Clan’s Ghostface Killah, Kanye West and pop star Justin Bieber, have joined in on the ICO craze. Many remain skeptical, however, assuming these are simply marketing ploys with celebrities attempting to cash in on their cachet.

Strange choice

To see a figure like Harry Redknapp promoting ICOs seems strange, as the 70-year-old former West Ham United, Portsmouth, Tottenham Hotspur and Birmingham City manager is not much of an influencer nor tech mogul.

Redknapp tweeted on Thursday to say how excited he was about Electroneum, a new cryptocurrency being launched in the UK. “I’m in. Get involved,” he urged his 213,000 followers in his first tweet since August.

At his trial for tax evasion in 2012, when he was acquitted, Redknapp said he was a terrible businessman and “a bit of a gambler” whose lack of investment nous had nearly “wiped out” his son Jamie.

Not paid for

Electroneum responded to Redknapp’s tweet insisting that Redknapp had not been paid for his tweet.
